Bo Innovation

This is not exactly fine dining but the food is either above average or pretty yums. I highly recommend the molecular "xiao long bao" and har mi and of course, try their set lunches for a more economical fare. I'm pretty amused by their dish names because they use inverted commas so appropriately. For example, it's "xiao long bao" because it's not the real xiao long bao, just the broth in a bubble that pops in your mouth. I also had something "choy sum" because it's like, choy sum sauce, not the real vegetables. The ambience is relaxed and not spiffy-stuffy. The open kitchen concept allows you to see the chefs at work and it's pretty interesting to see the different personalities they have.

Yay or Nay? Yay
But? Be adventurous!
To try? molecular "xiao long bao" and har mi
Address? Shop 13, 2/F J Residence, 60 Johnston Road, Wan Chai (website)

Tim Ho Wan Dim Sum 添好運點心專門店

Another 1 Michelin star place. As often raved about, the cha siu bao has a very unique crust, almost like bo lou bao. The 蝦餃 (prawn dumplings), 咸水餃 (savoury deep fried dumpling) and 潮州粉粿 (teochew dumplings) are very nice too! The prawn was so sweet and fresh. The crust of the deep fried dumplings were very crispy and the fillings were great too. The teochew dumplings are not the nicest I've tried but I'd rate it 2nd place. Unfortunately, the pork ribs and chicken feet were bordering bad. Be prepared for a long wait though. The Sham Shui Po outlet is bigger and less crowded I heard. I went on a weekend and about 1 or 2pm and the queue moved really quickly, with about only 10 people ahead of me.

Yay or Nay? Yay
But? Give the pork ribs and chicken feet a miss
To try? cha siu bao, prawn dumplings, teochew dumplings, fried dumplings

Hide-Chan Ramen 秀拉麵

When I see Fukuoka ramen and I'll start drooling. A sucker for thick soup bases, this is one of the better ramens that I've tasted. They have 3 choices - white, black and red. Red means spicy. I cannot remember what white and black means *fail* You also get to choose how firm you want your ramen to be. Their hard boiled eggs are very nicely done with a soft centre. My favourite ramen place didn't even managed that the last time I went! You can choose if you want just half an egg or a whole egg - good for the cholesterol conscious I guess.

Anyway, just try the original and choose the meat from the pig's neck! Those that order others (non-original) do not get this option.

Yay or Nay? Yay
But? Everyone has his/her own favourite place for ramen. This is not mine though it's quite good!
To try? Original
Address? 33 Wellington Street, Central. Map here.
Nearest MTR? Central D2.

Chung Kee Dessert 松記糖水店

Another dessert shop! There's always a steady stream of people entering/leaving this place so yeah, should be safe. I tried their 六寶湯圓 (sticky riceballs in 6 different flavours) and yeah, it was pretty good. The 6 fillings are custard, black glutinous, green tea, red bean, peanut and sesame. They advise patrons to try the first 3 flavours first, followed by the last three which are stronger in taste. I personally liked the custard and peanut ones best. The rice balls are in ginger tea which is mild in taste so none of that eeky, overpowering ginger taste. They cook it upon ordering so you'll need to wait for about 10 mins or so.

Yay or Nay? Yay
But? Only tried 1 dish so, don't know about the rest
To try? Whatever, with the clear soup broth
Address? Check out the full list here. I went to the one at 23, Parkes Street G/floor
Nearest MTR? Jordan MTR exit C2. It's just next to Good Harvest or a shop away.

Tams Yannan Noodles 譚仔雲南米線

It's Yannan, not Yunnan. Maybe it's a typo from the printers and they are stuck with it. It's like the 貢茶 here has a poster that reads, "thank you for spaying with us" or something. Entertained myself for a while.

Anyway, this is a chain store so it shouldn't be difficult to find one. It's pretty good, I must say. The clear broth was quite flavourful and didn't taste too MSG-ed. This coming from Mainland (雲南) and all, it means it is staple-ful and dishes-less. They give so much 米線 and not a lot of 配料。

Yay or Nay? Yay
But? Not much variety I guess. It's generally just 米線+1 or 2 配料
To try? Whatever, with the clear soup broth
Address? Check out the full list here. I went to the one at 36, Jordan Road G/floor
Nearest MTR? Jordan MTR exit A. Cross the road though.

九記甜品專家

I dunno what is the EL name of this place and seriously, I don't give a damn. I read about it from another blog, recommending food s/he tried while s/he was here on a holiday.

Take tourists' recommendations with a pinch of salt, everybody. I'm not a tourist so I'm not shooting myself in the foot here, haha.

I should have known. I walked past the shop 3 times. 1st time: Nobody was in the shop. 2nd time: Went in for my dessert. There were about 5 other pple inside. 3rd time: 1 person was in the shop. This was on a Saturday night.

I tried their egg pudding with sesame 太極芝麻燉鮮奶. Ignoring the sesame part, I think I'll be able to include the 燉鮮奶 part into the Face Off and this will lose to Yee Shun as well. I think somehow, the cooling agent in Yee Shun is more powerful. This egg pudding is not cold enough for me as well. It's not as dense (thus too heavy & becomes too much after about 1/3 of the bowl) as Australia's but still not as refreshing.

Yay or Nay? Nay!
But? Maybe other dishes like their 湯圓 are okay, I don't know, I wouldn't know.
To try? None.
Address? 146 Wan Chai Road, G/F
Nearest MTR? Wanchai MTR exit A3

Yoshinoya 吉野家

No, I've not run out of food to write about. I just *love* Yoshinoya in Hong Kong. No, it's not a joke. I think it is comparable to the Yoshinoya in Japan. It's *that* good. Plus it has an assortment of shabu-shabu and meat cooked in the Chinese way (found in China's Yoshinoya as well) e.g. dong po meat. I usually just eat the beef bowl and it is yums. Go in the afternoon before 6pm to enjoy to afternoon tea set! I don't really have anything more to say other than find your nearest Yoshinoya here.

Zhen 珍豆漿豆腐花專門店

Soya beancurd (豆腐花) has never been my dessert of choice. I very much prefer a soya bean drink (豆漿) to the beancurd. Nonetheless, I thought the soya beancurd tastes great and has a certain rough texture. It's very different from the soya beancurds in my memory (I seldom eat it, remember?) and I liked it a lot. I'm guessing the slightly rough texture means that the beans are not too finely ground which probably means the usual machines are not used. Thumbs up for a cheap dessert!

Yay or Nay? Yay
But? Not as popular as the usual dessert suspects
To try? Soya anything!
Address? 124-128 Portland Street (Though technically, it's on Dundas Street so look for the cross junction of these two streets)
Nearest MTR? Yau Ma Tei Exit A1, it's quite a distance but just look for Dundas Street (intersecting at about 577 Nathan Road), turn into Dundas Street and continue walking till you see the intersection with Portland Street)

Very Good Restaurant 頂好海鮮酒家

At the entrance of this restaurant, there are many, many photographs taken with HK artistes and other famous people. I'm guessing they need this because the entrance, which is actually a flight of stairs to the basement, is easy to miss. When I first walked past this restaurant, I thought they were trying a little too hard. I mean, who knows when these photographs were taken? And does this reflect the standard of the food? With the endorsement of my friend on its char siu, I decided to try it too and I'm convinced!

Siu mei (燒味, assortment of roasted meat) is everywhere in HK. But good siu mei is not easy to find. Since I only tried the char siu and siu gap (燒鴿, roasted pigeon) here, I can only comment on these two. They were lips-smacking good! So I conclude, good siu mei comes at a price. Not that I think this place is exorbitant. The dishes I tried were all good. Their kailan was fresh, tender and crunchy. Very good!

Yay or Nay? Yay.
But? It's unlikely tourists will visit since it's not cheap and not that famous like Yung Kee
To try? Cha siu, siu gap and kailan (I can't remember what else I tried)
Address? 90-94 Nathan Road, TST
Nearest MTR? TST Exit B1
